Was Fort Lauderdale Ever a Fort?

Fort Lauderdale was never actually a fort; however, it served the US military well as a fighting site in the Second Seminole War. At the beginning of the Second Seminole War, the first ever United States stockade was named Fort Lauderdale. The fort was soon abandoned after the end of the war, and the area remained virtually empty until the Florida East Coast Railroad built tracks through the area in the mid-1890s, spurring land development. The city was incorporated early in 1911, and four years later it was designated the county seat of the newly formed Broward County.

Fast forward to World War II, Fort Lauderdale began living up to its military use by becoming a major US Navy base, complete with a Naval Air Station to train pilots, radar and fire control operator training schools, and a Coast Guard base at Port Everglades.

After this major war, soldiers returned home to the “roaring 20s,” kicking off a huge population. The Navy decommissioned its airfields in the city, and NAS Fort Lauderdale became the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
